Lessons Learned from Musical Theatre Training
As I take the stage this summer in The Wizard of Oz, I'm reminded of the remarkable journey that brought me here. Finishing my first year at Marymount Manhattan College and landing my first professional gig feels surreal. Reflecting on my year as a musical theatre student, I see how instrumental my training has been in shaping my artistic skills.
Sharpening Dance Skills Under Pressure
This past year, my dance training reached new heights. I dedicated eight months to honing my skills in ballet, tap, and jazz. Every morning started early, pushing me to develop a solid foundation and discipline as I learned choreography. My dance instructor's rigorous methods, although challenging, ultimately equipped me for the auditions. When I stepped into the dance callback, it was exhilarating to realize I could focus solely on capturing my character rather than struggling to remember the steps.
Vocal Confidence: Finding My Unique Voice
Equally vital was my vocal training, where my mentor encouraged me to explore my individuality. This newfound freedom transformed the way I approached performances. Instead of merely executing techniques, I was now able to infuse my personality into my singing. This confidence proved invaluable when preparing for my auditions.
Audition Techniques: Feeling Grounded In The Spotlight
My professors taught me essential audition techniques that alleviated much of my anxiety. Engaging with audition panels and establishing rapport, as suggested by guest speaker Lindsay Mendez, helped ease nerves. Additionally, doing focused warm-ups with calming music in a corner became my secret technique for grounding myself before auditions.
Unique Perspectives Enhance Education
Each teacher contributed unique perspectives, whether through acting exercises that stress understanding the character’s viewpoint or vocal flexibility. This tailored feedback enriched my learning experience and created profound growth in the skills I bring to the stage.
Looking Forward: A Journey Continues
As I prepare to join the ensemble of The Wizard of Oz, I look forward to applying these lessons on stage. The next few years promise even more opportunities to learn from my exceptional instructors. Embracing each lesson will guide me as I continue to navigate the evolving world of musical theatre.
As every performance represents a step on my journey, I will carry the wisdom of my first year in my back pocket, ready to take on everything the future holds.
